Harvesting turf in the 21st century
Using the Schwab Jumbo harvesting technique you can peel off rolls with a width of 220 cm and a length of 5 to 35 metres and wrap them ready for transport. This is the only machine of its kind in the world and we have been using the technique for over ten years in almost all the famous stadiums in Europe. The jumbo turf roll makes it possible to lay an entire stadium with turf within a single day. What is more, the ultra-wide rolls mean that there are hardly any joins to cope with. The peeling depth can be varied between 10 - 40 mm, permitting the harvesting of thick turfs which do not need a settling period and which can therefore be played on immediately. This also permits improvements to be made to the grass or even the playing surface to be completely exchanged within a very short time during the playing season.
The harvesting machine is an attachment for use with a tractor with at least 80 hp. The only modification which the tractor itself needs is for a rod to be mounted which serves as a steering aid and which the driver can use to align the machine with the cutting edge. A second man standing on a hydraulically extendable operating platform can control the speed at which the turfs are rolled up, the depth of peeling and the hydraulic functions required for depositing the finished roll. This can either be collected from the rear of the harvesting machine by a forklift truck or laid on the ground. During the rolling process a net or foil is automatically rolled up with the turf to protect it during transport. Thanks to this technique it is possible to harvest and load 2,000 square metres of turf in an hour.
